Palo Alto, CA

AI is the new electricity: Just as electricity transformed numerous industries starting 100 years ago, AI is now poised to do the same. AI Fund is a startup studio building new AI companies from the ground up. Our companies bridge AI technology and applications, focusing on industries and problems that we believe move the world forward. Founded by Dr. Andrew Ng, our team merges a deep understanding of AI technology with a proven ability to start new ventures. We have a unique business model that prepares founding members of a portfolio company with technical validation of the idea, experienced back office operational support and our team’s AI know how as well as connections within the AI community. This is an excellent opportunity for you to get in on the ground floor of an exciting AI Venture Firm and through it, grow its portfolio.

Our mission is to enable trustworthy and robust AI development and deployment. We will audit and monitor AI systems in order to instill confidence around AI in the public sector, the private sector, and the general public. As a result, we provide an independent, third-party stamp of approval certifying an AI system with respect to a specific use case, either involving efficacy or bias. In doing so, we are creating the standard for certain use cases as well as the broader playbook for AI regulation. This stamp of approval enables adoption and improvement of AI systems without fear of penalties from regulators or negative press. If companies have taken the right steps with us and placed the right governance infrastructure in place, they can scale their AI technology with confidence.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Operationalize and execute on our partnership with a large tech company (and develop additional partnerships based on our leads in highly regulated industries) by co-creating the standard for AI regulation and the playbook for proactive, responsible AI regulation that can be presented to regulatory bodies.
  • Drive relationships with government agencies to make contacts, further refine the idea, develop partnerships, and cultivate potential customers.
  • Identify which regulatory bodies to work with and the ideal projects to work on together, culminating in publicly releasing a regulatory framework.
  • Build and lead a high-performing team of engineers, operators, and sector experts within 6 months while maintaining a culture in line with AI Fund values.
  • You will also work with the co-founder/team to:
  • Identify, prioritize, and design an MVP of an AI governance product that will be delivered along with the audit service.

What You Must Bring

  • Must Haves:
  • Experience selling high-value technology projects into enterprise or government customers or conducting business development around high-level strategic partnerships.
  • A sense of authority and strong public speaking skills - you should be able to envision yourself testifying in front of congress about the need for responsible AI regulation.
  • A high-level understanding of AI architecture and infrastructure.
  • Previous team management experience.
  • Experience in setting and refining strategic direction.
  • Strong context-switching ability, meaning you are just as comfortable working with leading AI experts as you are with high-ranking government officials without tech expertise.
  • Previous startup experience or experience working with a small, scrappy team
  • Nice to Haves:
  • Experience dealing with policy or compliance considerations, particularly around privacy or data protection.
  • Experience in sectors that often deal with regulation, such as government, finance services, or healthcare sectors.

About PC: Our mission is to enable trustworthy and robust AI development and deployment. We are positioning ourselves to be a leading algorithm auditing firm as regulation passes by working with regulators at this nascent stage to develop the standard. In the short-term, we will work with companies in one of the aforementioned regulated industries to help them adopt technology with confidence that their tools meet their regulatory and compliance standards.

We hope you will fit well with our team’s culture. AI Fund team members:

  • Prioritize: Identify your most important tasks for moving the fund forward, and focus on them. Make sure you can stack rank according to priority, communicate out your priorities, and say “no” or “not now” appropriately to low priority items.
  • Execute fast:  Move quickly. Set ambitious but realistic deadlines, communicate them out, and stick to it. Don’t take two days to do what can be done in one day, nor two months to do what can be done in one. Startups live or die by their ability to execute, pivot, and grow faster than anyone else.
  • Work hard: Startups are a lot of work to build. A core advantage startups have over established companies is that they are willing to work much harder, and so can do much more. Lean in and do the work needed to give them the best chance of success.Own the outcome: Raise all fund-related issues directly. Propose solutions to any issue, including higher-level problems that are “outside your job scope.” We’re a small team and you are empowered to try to make anything better.
  • Be helpful: Leverage your team’s expertise and be generous in helping others in our ecosystem of companies. Let others help you too, and state your needs clearly to empower others to assist you.
  • Keep improving: Be receptive and welcome feedback. Keep looking for opportunities to learn. Keep investing in learning. Set high standards and reach for them.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Build out an MVP of an AI governance product that will be delivered along with the audit service in order to assess efficacy/bias.
  • Work with the AI technology community and build alliances and ecosystem.
  • Create a thought-leadership platform for the company by writing white papers with strategic partners, speaking at conferences, etc. As part of this, you will stay on top of the latest advances in the field.
  • You will also work with the co-founder/team to:
  • Serve as a credible expert in providing and assessing content for reasonable regulatory frameworks, our partnerships with large tech companies, and contracts with government agencies.

  • A history of publications related to AI.
  • Previous startup experience or experience working with a small, scrappy team.
  • Comfort explaining AI to laypeople
  • Nice to Haves:
  • Interaction with open-source or standards organizations: IEEE, EEF, Mozilla Foundation, Apache Foundation, etc.
  • Previous experience with AI ethics or regulation through organizations, academia, or internal corporate groups.

About Bearing AI:
Bearing is at the forefront of bringing AI to the maritime shipping industry. This is a trillion dollar industry that moves 90% of the goods we interact with on a daily basis, but has traditionally lagged far behind other industries in adopting new technologies. At Bearing, we’re changing that. We’re building an AI-driven platform that helps shipping companies dramatically streamline their operations and tackle their single biggest pain point. We’ve already built our first product and have some of the world’s biggest shippers as our partners. Our team is made up of highly experienced AI engineers and tech industry veterans and we’re backed by the AI Fund and shipping industry investors.

What You Will be Doing:

We are currently looking for an exceptionally talented Machine Learning Engineer to join our small team. You will be responsible for end-to-end ownership of scalable Machine Learning systems — from data pipelines, to training, to analyzing performance in a production environment. Since you’ll be joining an early-stage startup at the ground level, you’ll need to be able to wear multiple hats and thrive while working in a dynamic environment.

Design and train new production-ready machine learning models. You will lead the development of new machine learning models focused on converting a wide variety of data sets (e.g., ship sensors, weather, market rates) into actionable insights. You will apply fundamental machine learning concepts to quickly iterate and debug model related issues and develop new techniques to handle unique cases with each customer.

Collect, process and analyze data. A big part of our machine learning projects is understanding and analyzing the data. You must build pipelines and processes for cleaning and organizing data as well as build tools to help analyze data. You must also understand what types of data models are struggling with and use this analysis to propose solutions.

Analyze and improve existing models. You will also be responsible for analyzing performance of our existing models and work to improve their accuracy by applying the latest published research, feature engineering and tuning of hyperparameters.

What You Must Bring:

Must Haves:

3+ years professional experience designing, training and deploying machine learning models
Strong computer science foundation including data structures, algorithms and design patterns
Expertise in Python demonstrated by implementing multiple medium to large scale projects
Proven ability to implement and debug machine learning models
Excellent communication skills and the ability to have in-depth technical discussions with both the engineering team and business people
Familiarity with machine learning frameworks and libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, Keras, TensorFlow, PyTorch)
Industry experience with relational databases and SQL-based tools
BSc in Computer Science, Mathematics or similar field; Master’s or PhD degree is a plus
Self-starter and comfort working in an early-stage environment

Nice to Haves:

Experience with big data pipeline technologies such as MapReduce, Spark, Kafka
Research experience in machine learning or artificial intelligence related field
Contributions to open source ML projects
Experience working on logistics or shipping-related products
Experience with Agile development

What We Offer:

Free snacks, drinks, lunches and dinners daily
Untracked PTO including a week off between Christmas and New Year’s
Variety of medical, dental and vision coverage to choose from
Collegial atmosphere
Direct and transparent communication style
Empowered to be the best you can be
Innovative environment
