You will be working closely with the team to quickly execute and iterate on the product vision You will play an integral role at a company at the forefront of bringing AI to the maritime shipping, the industry enabling our global economy.

Performance Objectives

API and data pipeline. You will be responsible for integrating the product with a weather API in order to estimate routes. You will build out the data pipeline, ensuring we can make route suggestions prior to a voyage by incorporating the latest sensor information from a ship as well as weather projections from the API. You will also incorporate data streams from the ship, market, and in order to make dynamic adjustments while the ship is on its route.

Integration and information development. You will be responsible for technically integrating the product into our partners’ operations as necessary. This could include ensuring the product interoperates with related fuel-saving products or building dashboards to convey information in a comprehensible way to stakeholders. Over time, this integration will become more complex and may include exploring integration of the algorithm into ECDIS, the vessel’s central console, as the product moves from on-shore to on-ship.

Support development of AI and simulation model. In addition to Python proficiency and a demonstrable ability to write and maintain medium-sized software codebases, you will be responsible for working with the lead MLE to apply specific technologies (anomaly detection, supervised learning, CNN/RNN architectures, preprocessing steps, what type of data and labels to collect) in accordance with the design of the overall AI system architecture. Who we are:
AI is the new electricity: Just as electricity transformed numerous industries starting 100 years ago, AI is now poised to do the same. AI Fund is a startup studio building new AI companies from the ground up. Our companies bridge AI technology and applications, focusing on industries and problems that we believe move the world forward. Founded by Dr. Andrew Ng, our team at AI Fund merges a deep understanding of AI technology with a proven ability to start new ventures. We have a unique business model that prepares founding members of a portfolio company with technical validation of the idea, experienced back office operational support and our team’s AI know how as well as connections within the AI community. This is an excellent opportunity for you to get in on the ground floor of an exciting AI Venture Firm and through it, grow its portfolio.

About FourthBrain:
From Silicon Valley to Puerto Rico, students now have the opportunity to learn next-generation artificial intelligence applications, theories, methods, and systems. Our team, mostly from Stanford, has collectively educated more people in machine learning than any other organization in the world. The program is a blended-learning program that trains existing engineers to become machine-learning experts within six months.

What you will be doing:
- Organize content for a world-class, blended-learning program to train existing engineers to become machine-learning engineers within six months.
- Assist a live training program with students and intervene to overcome any obstacles to 100% completion.
- Hold office hours daily to address trainees’ questions, lead several general workshops a week, and make immediate tweaks if students are not learning subjects at a fast enough pace.
- Lead technical interview process to recruit highly motivated candidates who can become extraordinary machine-learning engineers

You must have:

Ability to explain complex concepts clearly to a diverse audience: You should be able to take concepts that are tricky, understand why they trip people up, and teach them to a group of people from a variety of different backgrounds.

Ability to identify and anticipate challenges of students going through a rigorous machine learning experience: A key part of the job is ensuring students don’t get stuck in a very fast paced environment. You should sense and, ideally anticipate, when students might run into problems. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to have prior teaching experience, but you should be able to form an accurate picture of the feelings and motivations of those around you.

Huge pride about building out a new pipeline of AI talent in Puerto Rico: We intend for this program to play a large role in helping to grow pipelines of talent in machine learning outside Silicon Valley. You should be excited about helping to make this dream a reality.

Experience working on deployment as a machine learning engineer: We are designing this program to place students in jobs as machine-learning engineers. Students will often have questions about how things work in practice, and having in the trenches experience will allow you to guide them easily.

We hope you will fit well with our team’s culture:

Prioritize: Identify your most important tasks for moving the fund forward, and focus on them. Make sure you can stack rank according to priority, communicate out your priorities, and say “no” or “not now” appropriately to low priority items.

Execute fast:  Move quickly. Set ambitious but realistic deadlines, communicate them out, and stick to it. Don’t take two days to do what can be done in one day, nor two months to do what can be done in one. Startups live or die by their ability to execute, pivot, and grow faster than anyone else

Work hard: Startups are a lot of work to build. A core advantage startups have over established companies is that they are willing to work much harder, and so can do much more. Lean in and do the work needed to give them the best chance of success.

Own the outcome: Raise all fund-related issues directly. Propose solutions to any issue, including higher-level problems that are “outside your job scope.” We’re a small team and you are empowered to try to make anything better.

Be helpful: Leverage your team’s expertise and be generous in helping others in our ecosystem of companies. Let others help you too, and state your needs clearly to empower others to assist you.

Keep improving: Be receptive and welcome feedback. Keep looking for opportunities to learn. Keep investing in learning. Set high standards and reach for them.

This is a full-time position based in San Juan, Puerto Rico and may also entail commuting from time to time to Mayaguez (also in Puerto Rico). You must already have, or be able to obtain, authorization to work in the United States.
At AI Fund, we are committed to providing an environment of mutual respect where equal employment opportunities are available to all applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy (including childbirth, lactation and related medical conditions), national origin, age, physical and mental disability, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, genetic information (including characteristics and testing), military and veteran status, and any other characteristic protected by applicable law. - Execute fast:  Move quickly. Set ambitious but realistic deadlines, communicate them out, and stick to it. Don’t take two days to do what can be done in one day, nor two months to do what can be done in one. Startups live or die by their ability to execute, pivot, and grow faster than anyone else.

- Work hard: Startups are a lot of work to build. A core advantage startups have over established companies is that they are willing to work much harder, and so can do much more. Lean in and do the work needed to give them the best chance of success.

- Own the outcome: Raise all fund-related issues directly. Propose solutions to any issue, including higher-level problems that are “outside your job scope.” We’re a small team and you are empowered to try to make anything better.

- Be helpful: Leverage your team’s expertise and be generous in helping others in our ecosystem of companies. Let others help you too, and state your needs clearly to empower others to assist you.
